The Importance of Walking Your Dog

If you want your dog to be really your dog, make sure you go out with him at least once a day – twice a day if you can. Even if he goes out with you at the end of a leash on a dreary city street, your dog will still look forward to his romp with you.

Why is walking your dog so important? First of all, dogs of all sizes have to be exercised. If they are not, they will grow fat and lazy and maybe even get sick. Secondly, it makes them happy. House dogs – and this includes dogs that are tied outside the house all day – have very little to look forward to. Two of the most important things in their lives are going out for a walk with you and eating. And, your dog would rather be with you than eat.

Notice how joyfully your dog barks and wags his tail when you ask him if he’d like to go out. Why shouldn’t he be happy? This is the part of the day he’s been waiting for. Once you get outside, make the trip a happy one for the dog. Don’t just walk with him – run! The more you run with him, the more he’ll like it.

If you’re out in the country where there is no danger of cars and trucks, take off his leash and let him run free. This is what every dog enjoys most of all. In no time at all, he’ll pick up the scent of game – real or imaginary – and be off in pursuit. But, don’t worry about his running away. As soon as he discovers that you are no longer in sight, he’ll come back looking for you.
